This book is about the day that all slaves in America were free. President Lincoln freed all salves in 1863, but there were still three slaves in Texas that did not hear the news until 1865. When they heard they were free, then they celebrated, which later became Juneteenth.
Personal Reaction:
When I read this book, this was the first time that I have heard of this holiday. I did not even know that it existed. I really like how it explained the holiday and gave little facts about it also.
Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. I would use this to teach students about this holiday. Afterwards we could do a craft that relates back to the first Juneteenth celebration.
2. You could also have a little mini celebration with the students to help them understand that anyone can celebrate it.
