Book description

Adventure story of a 15 year old boy who runs away to France to escape being enlisted on his father's ship. He falls in with an eye doctor, and they explore the countryside of pre-Revolutionary France. Through luck and pluck, he becomes the secretary of an important French government offical, and is able to communicate with the British government a French attempt to cause an European war to destract the populance. He thus becomes an important spy for the British, especially working with William Pitt, the Prime Minister. Good adventure story, romanctic entanglements, swordplay and duels, clever work in using codes and understanding French problems of the period.
