The American heiress, Edie, has fashioned a perfect life for herself. She's a duchess, she has status and independence. In exchange for her money, the duke took himself off to Africa, indefinitely, shortly after the wedding. A marriage in name only, just the way Edie wants it. But then Stuart, the formerly impoverished Duke of Margrave, had a change of heart. He almost dies in Kenya, his faithful valet does die. He decides to return to England and see if his marriage can be salvaged. It's an uphill climb. Edie has no use for men, especially her husband. Through a slow and subtle stalking, Stuart finally realizes his goal. And Edie has her vengeance on the man who drove her to London, away from New York society, courtesy of her husband's connections in the aristocracy. Revenge is sweet. 3.5 stars. There was quite a bit that was good about this book, an intriguing start, a besotted hero, all the minor characters had personalities that helped flesh out the story. There seemed to be a major inconsistency with the heroine between the last book and this one, if she had only been pretending to consider taking a lover in the last book I think it should have at least been mentioned in this one, she had been speaking just with her friend, so we had no reason to believe it was a bald faced lie... but it was so far from the realm of possibility in this book, that something was definitely off. And the ending was weaker than the rest of the story, imo, long scenes where characters explain things that the other characters hadn't grasped but were likely already obvious to the reader by that point. A bit stilted. I'm glad I read it though, and look forward to the next! no reviews | add a review
