First-rate characters, Millicent is more fully realized, full of faults and virtues, mistakes and bravery. Sir Gareth is still a cipher at the end of the novel, but he fulfills his role well. The magic is wonderful, better than much fantasy-only fiction. The constructed world is full of detail and I felt like I was walking through an alternate reality, resembling a might-have-been London in Regency times. (
