Excellent portrait of the complex and passionate, intertwined creative and personal lives of two groundbreaking artists whose lifestyles were as avant-garde as their aesthetic sensibilities. An engaging, revealing, and handsomely designed biography. ( )

RGG: Fascinating. Many details about influences: artistic, historical, politics. Their relationship and infidelities are described clearly but not salaciously. A bit hard to follow: moving back and forth in time and two parallel histories. Also it would have been preferable if descriptions of specific pieces always accompanied photos of the pieces. Reading Interest: YA.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0547821840, Hardcover)

Nontraditional, controversial, rebellious, and politically volatile, the Mexican artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera are remembered for their provocative paintings as well as for their deep love for each other. Their marriage was one of the most tumultuous and infamous in history—filled with passion, pain, betrayal, revolution, and, above all, art that helped define the twentieth century.

Catherine Reef's inspiring and insightful dual biography features numerous archival photos and full-color reproductions of both artists' work. Endnotes, bibliography, timeline.
