"Miss Hoult writes a simple, stark type of realism with great emphasis on details. After presenting several days of wrangling home life, of drinking bouts, of scenes around London, she ends the book without any climax or solution. It is just a series of episodes, all of which are depressing."

Quotations
Why was it, she asked herself bitterly, that the law allowed a woman no rights over her husband's earnings? She could go about looking like a scarecrow, the children were wanting nourishment every child should have, while the man who had promised solemnly at the altar to provide for them drank away the barest necessities of life evening after evening - in a common public-house. That was the law. That was the way things were allowed to go on in an alleged Christian country.

Book description
Time Gentleman! Time! is Miss Norah Hoult's first complete novel. She began it before the publication of her first work Poor Women, which won for her so immediate a success. The scope of Time Gentleman! Time! lies within a few days in the life of an Irish solicitor named Carmichael, who lives in a London suburb with his wife and two children. Owing partly to the habit he has acquired of drinking to excess his practice is on its last legs; and his family is shown facing destitution. The climax comes when, one night after hearing of his closest friend's death, Carmichael is touched with the hand of the law. The story is a fine study of one of those who, in the phrase of the poet, T.M. Kettle, "have not lived as wisely as the rest."
