"Soldier-for-hire Ethan Hayes is the youngest member of an elite mercenary team. While he may be affectionately nicknamed the rookie, the skills Ethan honed as a Marine make him seriously dangerous. But when a sudden distress call puts him in close quarters with a rival, he finds more than his field skills being put to the test. Juliet Mason stands out as the master thief in a covert group of assassins and spies. Her latest mission is personal--and it's gone horribly wrong. Juliet may prefer to work alone, but when the rookie comes to her aid in snowy Eastern Europe, she can't deny they make a good team. But even up against a powerful enemy, their most challenging task yet may be fighting the passion between them."--from cover, p. [4]… (more)

Another good Killer Instincts novel. Juliet is looking for revenge for the death of her brother. After Juliet is injured, Ethan, the rookie, comes to her aid. When Juliet recovers, Ethan joins her quest for revenge but gives her lots to think about. These two seeming opposites find common ground where they least expect it. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters as well as the involvement of some of the other characters from the two organizations headed by Noelle and Jim whose interaction also proved to be very entertaining. I'm looking forward to reading Midnight Action next. Hopefully somewhere along the way Kennedy will be telling D's story. ( )

Holy mother of…. The ending of this book just blew my mind. Each of these books has paired a man from the mercenary’s team and a woman from the assassins team but at the core its always been the underlying mystery between Jim (leader of the mercs) and Noelle (leader of the assassins) that has fueled every book. I loved the story of Ethan and Juliet. The two couldn’t have been more different not just in age but also in their upbringings and their views on life. Juliet has always considered herself a loner and hardened to the core but when her foster brother is killed she wants vengeance but manages to get herself shot and Ethan is the one to take the call for help when her fellow teammate is off on her honeymoon. As usual the suspense was high and almost all the team ended up involved. I absolutely cannot wait until the next book which is Noelle and after you read this book you will be as crazy as I am in having to wait for it. Bravo Ms Kennedy was another great adventure in a fabulous series that I just cant get enough of. ( )

Midnight Pursuits: 4.30:
Another enjoyable, entertaining, exciting, suspenseful addition to a phenomenal series. Kennedy has such a gifted voice as she tells her stories that she quickly draws readers into the lives of the characters walking across the pages of her books. She did so in this book as well, nevertheless, it is not a favorite in this series.

Hero: 4.50:
Ethan Hayes: Can't help but love this All-American, 'boy next door' member of Morgan's Mercenaries. Ethan comes across as a gentleman and gives off a competent, serene aura, but when it is time to enter into the fray with the bad guys, he can kick butt (and take names) just like the rest of his teammates.

Heroine: 1.50:
Juliet "Jules" Mason: Sorry, but it was just impossible to really, truly like this beautiful, kick-ass, thief and assassin. Kennedy really did her job at revealing the tender underside beneath Juliet's hard shell (with tear-inducing stories), but her smart mouth and 'what's in it for me' attitude was just too potent to warm up to.

Sub-Plot Hero One: 5.00:
Derek "D: Platt: My number one favorite character in the series. Love the way Kennedy is developing D's personality. And even though he says he has no emotions, his actions continue to prove him wrong. (Really, really want his story to be the next book in the series.)

Sub-Plot Hero Two: 5.00:
Jim Morgan: My number two favorite character in the series. Kennedy has only been giving readers tiny peeks at his personality, but it is just enough to guarantee avid interest. There is definitely some history between him and Noelle.

Secondary Heroine: 4.50:
Noelle: The Queen of the Assassins. Kennedy has her work cut out for her to thaw out the ice around this heart. Noelle was a bit more palatable in this book, in that she didn't come across quite as cold and brutal as she appeared in the previous books.

Story Line: 4.00:
Very interesting story line. When an assassin shots Juliet's beloved brother, she is out for revenge. Her injury forces this loner to call for help and, Ethan, inadvertently, is the man to answer the call. The villain is introduced and several other targets are revealed. Ethan cannot let the remaining targets go unprotected and Juliet agrees to help Ethan and his teammates protect the innocent.

Action: 3.50:
There were not as many adventurous action scenes in this book, but the ones that were featured were well-written and extremely entertaining.

Emotion: 5.00:
The most emotionally moving book in the series. Kennedy really had the tears flowing in this one . . . and the laughter bubbling.

Romance: 3.50:
The romantic buildup was minimal between Ethan and Juliet because there wasn't enough time between the plethora of events that were occurring during the story. It was difficult to feel the romantic connection between Ethan and Juliet because they just did not seem to "fit" together. For some reason, Juliet just did not feel like she was the right woman for Ethan.

Suspense: 4.00:
Kennedy kept readers immersed in the story because of the exciting, edge-of-your-seat tension running through the book. You just had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next.

Sensuous: 2.50:
The love scenes between Ethan and Juliet were spicy, heated, potent, and original when it came to the settings.

Secondary Characters: 3.50:
Kennedy did not spent quite as much time featuring her secondary characters (and their entertaining dialogue) in this book as in the previous books of the series. Nevertheless, the attention-grabbing secondary characters were wonderful additions to the story. They included: {1} Henry Jonathan Albright, {2} Sullivan "Sully" Port, {3} Liam MacGregor, {4} Anastacia "Stacie" Karin, and {4} Dmitry Orlov. Several minor, but necessary, supporting characters were briefly thrown into the story: {1} Val Markin, {2} Kirill, {3} Alexei Mironov, {4} Nina Berezovsky, {5} Roman, and {6} Mikhail.

MIDNIGHT PURSUITS by Elle Kennedy is an exciting Romantic Thriller. #4 in "A Killer Instincts Novel", but can be read as a stand alone. WOW!

A fast paced Romantic Thriller. Filled with sizzling sex, high-adventure, heart-pounding excitement, fierce characters, edge of your seat reading, and an emotional tale of two emotionally scarred loners.

Quick & Dirty: Midnight Pursuits begins with a mystery that hooks you and then turns into an action-packed story about vengeance.

Opening Sentence: Nothing beat a cup of steaming-hot coffee in the dead of winter, at least in Ethan Hayes’s humble opinion.

The Review:

Midnight Pursuits is the fourth title in the Killer Instinct series. The story starts off with Ethan Hayes taking a relaxing vacation in Vermont (at Trevor and Isabel’s place), mainly contemplating his future when he gets a shocking phone call from Juliet Mason. Juliet is badly hurt and needs Isabel’s help but Isabel has just conveniently left on her honeymoon with Trevor and without her cell phone. Ethan jokingly answers the cell phone not realizing the distressing situation on the other end.

Ethan who is never one to leave a lady in distress or even a teammate immediately leaves for Belarus. He is thrust into a vengeance plot that includes a high ranking government official and an anti-government militia group. What begins as a two person operation will eventually grow to include other members of the team after they discover the depths a person will go to assassinate family members of government officials in order to teach them a lesson. Juliet wants to ruin his plans with her own plan of revenge.

The beginning of Midnight Pursuits is shrouded in mystery before going back and telling Juliet’s story of how she got into her predicament. I really enjoyed this tactic because it hooked me in and I really wanted to know what happened to Juliet. After that the mystery part of the storyline disappeared and turned into an action/covert ops story.

Midnight Pursuits also has a minor storyline that follows Noelle, Jim Morgan, and D. This is a huge set up for the next book, Midnight Action, which is Jim and Noelle’s story. Their relationship has been teased since book one and I am absolutely looking forward to finding out what happened to them in the past.

Ethan is the rookie of the team and is often teased because of his age. He is also the reliable one and will put himself in the way of harm for any team member. He is the sweetie pie of the team but he also has a dark and almost voyeuristic side. He also knows when to step back and let Juliet lead which is a huge turn on for Juliet.

Juliet is quite the loner. She claims to be selfish and only looks after herself. We do learn that while she enjoys her incredible freedom that her job enables her, she really isn’t as selfish as she thinks. She will commit the ultimate act of selflessness that really changes her character.

Midnight Pursuits is my favorite of the series so far. I felt like the story tried to stick with Ethan and Juliet as much as possible. The story did skip to other points of views but kept them short and sweet and in context of the storyline that was going on. Also, you don’t have to have read the rest of the series in order to pick up this book. I think this one could definitely be read as a standalone.

Overall, I was hooked into this story from the beginning and I was fairly surprised by how it played out. If you are a fan of the military op type books than I would definitely recommend giving this series a try.

Notable Scene:

“Fine. Let’s find those people and warn them.”

He smiled in the darkness.

“I guess finding them could work to my advantage,” she added, as if trying to rationalize the plan to herself. “If Orlov wants them dead, then clearly they’re important to him. Maybe I can use them as leverage, dangle them in front of Orlov in order to get to the bastard.”

He had to laugh. “I see. So as long as there’s something in it for you, then you’re totally on board. You can’t just do it out of the goodness of your heart, huh?”

“What heart?”

“You don’t have to keep pretending with me. You can drop the heartless-bitch act, you know. It’s okay to care about other people.”

“But I don’t care,” she answered flatly. “I still don’t give a shit about those strangers. But Henry would have cared. He would have gone out of his way to protect them from Orlov.”

“See, you do care. About your brother, at least.”

She grumbled in irritation. “Stop trying to find the good in me. Truth is, I am a heartless bitch. Self-preservation is the only thing that matters to me.”

“If that were true, you wouldn’t have dropped everything to race to your brother’s bedside. And you wouldn’t be risking your own life now to avenge him.”

She let out a sigh. “Make no mistake, rookie—if it had ever come down to protecting Henry or protecting myself, I would’ve chosen me.”

Ethan held his tongue. If she wanted him to think she was a cold, emotionless bitch, then fine.

But he didn’t believe it for a second.
