This is a children’s non-fiction book geared for graders 1 – 4. Seymour
Simon manages to summarize the main points of “the weather” into a
short 32-page book. This book covers how the sun impacts the earth’s
weather, the rotation of the earth, and the water cycle. This book also
provides short factual paragraphs about the different types of clouds,
lakes, oceans, and even snowflakes. The book is a great resource to allow
students to learn more about the atmosphere, clouds, the earth’s rotation,
and the water cycle. ( )

Just what you would expect from this well-respected science writer for children. Plenty of information, not too hard for a read aloud for younger kids.

Weather gives the reader a basic overview of how different weather patterns are created, the names and properties of different clouds, how several elements of weather are produced (including rain, snow, sleet, hailstones) and how weather patterns are analyzed. Illustrative photographs, mostly taken by the author, clearly support the text. This is an excellent introduction to basic aspects of weather and would be a very effective unit opener read aloud in grades 3-6. Students, particularly those that are strong auditory learners or with good reading and listening comprehension skills, could come away with a good understanding of these topics, but since there are only a few diagrams, it would be very effective to supplement it with video or other graphic depictions of weather phenomena. Overall, this survey book will get students thinking about the subject of weather and hopefully generate curiosity to explore and learn more about it. Target audience grades 3-5.

This book explains the way the sun and the earth work together to create the weather we encounter daily. There is information on all aspects of weather; however, there's not as much information on storms as the book cover suggests.

A good book to spark interest in weather in general. ( )
