Not all Secret! This book covers a wide the range of aircraft procurement.

I pre-ordered this book last fall and it has been worth the wait. It follows the usual style of Mr. Buttler and is divided by type of aircraft. The copy writing/description for the book DOES explain that production types will be covered, yet the bulk of the book does cover experimental and proposed aircraft very well. The Hughes Aircraft illustrations and a few other were the first ones I've seen published.

If you're looking for a book that strictly covers non-production aircraft....look somewhere else. If you're looking for a pretty well balanced book that covers the range of aircraft procurement from 1937 until 1945, this is a pretty decent little purchase. ( )

My initial reaction upon starting this book was to think that, just maybe, we've reached the bottom of the barrel in what can be said about American aircraft development and have gone a little too far. On further reflection the authors can be said to have done a fine job of putting the range of projects discussed into wider perspective, such as how the more exotic efforts to transcend the limitations of reciprocating piston engines driving propellers failed to deliver, how the ultimate piston-engined fighters made true multi-purpose aircraft a viable proposition and the general trends working against specialization.
