Boll has a remarkably distinctive voice, contemplative yet full of irony and humor, and this voice is brought out well by these two novellas. He uses modernist writing techniques in an accessible and down-to-earth way. This is not the best Boll out there, but is a good, short introduction that will give the reader a sense of a man who, with Gunter Grass, really defined post-war German writing.
