All Sorts of Numbers is a fairly basic counting book, but it has a little more panache than simply noting the numbers. Each page has a brief poetic description of children playing and then invites the reader to count the number of something in the accompanying brightly colorful illustration (i.e., the number of kites children are playing with on the beach). Everything goes along nicely until the "story" ends with a child trying to sleep and counting sheep. There are no sheep in the illustrations although a beginner counting book should take into account that the very young intended audience will want/need to see the sheep in order to count them, especially given that this is the only page where the number five is introduced. The last page just shows a bunch of random illustrations and asks "How many balls can you count?," which is a fine activity for the young readers but seems like a sort of anticlimactic ending. The book then concludes with some "fun facts," a glossary, bibliography, and webliography, all of which can be useful for kids (or guardians) who are looking for additional learning/resources. ( )
