Through a combination of careful scholarship and the warmth of the deep personal devotion of the author, this book provides the authoritative English study of Eastern orthodox theology. Lossky's account makes clear the profound theological differences between East and West, as well as offering an important contribution to ecumenism and to the life of Christian devotion. This is a beautiful and inspiring book, that focuses on contemplation as opposed to doctrine or morality. Vladimir Lossky's words have wisdom and depth of understanding. I would advise it to anyone interested in getting to know eastern spirituality. ( )

I had read this book several years ago when I first had learned about the Orthodox Church and was trying to find out more about. I don't remember my reaction to it much other than that I was deeply impressed and completely confused. It's a bit difficult to read if you are, as I was then, entirely unfamiliar with the history of the Church and with Orthodox theology and terminology. But, now that I'm much more familiar with those, I have to say that this book is amazing. I think that everyone who converts to Orthodoxy should do what I did. Read it as one of the first books you read when becoming Orthodox and after living the Orthodox life for a few years read it again. It is without doubt the best book on Orthodox spirituality and theology in the English language -- the classic and the standard. ( )

Book description
From Back Cover:
Vladimir Lossky established himself as one of the most brilliant of Orthodox scholars in the years between his departure from Russia in 1923 and his death in 1958. His uncompromising faithfulness to Scriptural and patristic tradition, coupled with his constant concern for an articulate Orthodox witness in the West, make his works indispensable for an understanding of the theology of the Eastern Church today.

In this classic study of Orthodox theology, Lossky states that "in a certain sense all theology is mystical, inasmuch as it shows forth the divine mystery: the data of revelation ... the eastern tradition has never made a sharp distinction between mysticism and theology, between personal experience of the divine mysteries and the dogma affirmed by the Church." The term "mystical theology" denotes in the realm of human experience, that which is accessible yet inaccessible; those things understood yet surpassing all knowledge.

Other excellent volumes featuring the works of Vladimir Lossky and published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press include: Orthodox Theology: An Introduction, The Vision of God, In the Image and Likeness of God and co-authored with Leonid Ouspensky The Meaning of Icons (Revised Edition).
