Stephanie Bennett has taken a two-month assignment in Santa Barbara, hoping to leave her bad memories behind for the holidays. And who could be better to help her forget than playboy Dr. Phil Hansen? As the title gives away, there is a pregnancy in the offing.

There is a very important third wheel in this relationship; Phil’s four-year-old half-brother. Phil’s father and stepmother have asked him to take charge of Robbie, who has Down syndrome, while they take a much-needed vacation in Hawaii. Robbie both advances the romance, forcing the two doctors to work together, but also serves as a pint-size chaperone, cancelling plans for romantic dinners.

What I liked about this book: the sexual tension starts on page one, and continues throughout the book. The Christmas setting in Santa Barbara is beautiful and is described just the right amount; likewise the medical jargon and work is balanced in as well. Too many novels feature a hero and heroine who are supposed to be working people, but spend all their time romancing and no time actually working. I also liked that Stephanie’s secret leaks out a little bit at a time.

What bothered me about this book: When the moment comes, Phil offers to wear a condom, and Stephanie tells him it’s not necessary, because she’s had her tubes tied. Even though both characters are doctors, that doesn’t mean one of them couldn’t be carrying an STD, especially since Phil’s reputation has preceded him. IMO, it would’ve been better to have Phil wear a condom and have it break, and have the conversation afterwards. If we’re going to have Stephanie get pregnant in spite of having had her tubes tied, what’s one more obstacle to overcome? ( )
