Otis Skinner's life and career spanned the decades when American entertainment was undergoing rapid and tremendous change. He started work as a professional stage actor in the 1880s (with a personal letter of recommendation from P. T. Barnum!); and at the close of the book he details a successful career in the emerging film industry in early-1920s California. In between, this genial autobiography is entertaining and moving as Skinner describes the many challenges of life as an actor in the Gilded Age and beyond. ( )
