Andrew Hook's meta-noir thriller is an exotic meta-web. Imagine a species of spider that lives socially, like bees, in a colony. The arachnid hive-mind might weave a story this complex and unpredictable, the adventures of hard-boiled, old-school PI Mordent.
Spoiler Alert for Image: Don’t look too closely at the diagram I sketched in real time as I read The Immortalists. It began with one page and expanded to four, starting in the lower left quadrant with our hero, spinning up, down, and around, landing several times, of course, in the upper right quadrant at the morgue, before asking the eternal question of the lower right quadrant: Who is she? And never overlook the upper left quadrant where the reader visits Mordent’s dark childhood memories. Secrets within secrets. Bodies leading to more bodies and to people who are trying desperately not to end up as bodies.
