At six years old, Myla was sent to a family her father and mother had chosen for her when they knew their time on earth was almost up. What they were unaware of was that what they thought would be her safe haven would become her living hell. Kai has been watching Myla from afar since he took over the family business from his father and inherited the responsibility of keeping her safe. When word gets back to Kai that Myla is not only in danger, but that his assets are also being compromised, he immediately jumps into action and does the only thing that can be done at the time: he marries her. Neither Myla nor Kai would have thought that something that started off as a farce would become the most important thing either of them could have ever done.… (more)

Myla and Kai are connected through their families. Myla was taken away as a child to a place where she could live without the backlash from things in which her family was involved. Somehow trouble still finds her. Kai has secretly been trying to watch over her through the years and comes to her rescue. In order to keep her safe, they pretend to be married, but more comes from this plan than the original intention.
"So we try to make this into a real relationship."

"Every relationship starts with attraction. You're attracted to me, and I'm attracted to you."

Most of the book is the two of them trying to figure it out—how they feel about each other and how to proceed. A lot of it feels kind of new adult because of the uncertainty and the new emotions for both. More hard core bits of the organize crime pop in occasionally throughout the story.

Uncle Frank may be my favorite character from the novel. He's the comic relief, a big silly goof that does manage to give help when it's needed.

Obligation has a super sweet epilogue. It was my favorite part of the book, and I smiled while reading it.

Now to what I thought of the book. It seemed like just rambling. I could not figure out what the point was suppose to be. Nothing really happens in it.

I am torn about how to write this review. On the one hand I loved the story of Kai and Myla. Back in a previous book and different series we knew a little about them but here is my issue – that was a while ago and while we got basically two short prologues to show when Kai and Myla first met as kids and her closeness to her father, the first chapter throws us right in the middle of an on ongoing plot which most of didn’t happen in any book. As we are in Myla’s POV for much of the first half of the book we are as clueless as she is as to what is really going on. Maybe that was the authors intent and if it was it worked as we basically found things out as Myla did but it was a little weird to just step into what seemed like of the middle of a story.

In the few times we were in Kai head we knew he has cared about Myla since he was 10. As the story progresses we as readers realize that they have always been meant for each other and their love story is beautiful. There are a lot of suspenseful side plots that go on during the course of this book but we only caught small glimpses of them as the book really focused more on the romance and family aspect. I would have liked to have read more about the suspenseful things that happened “off camera” but I still enjoyed the book and the characters and look forward to the next book in the series.
