'Sophocles, in a play that won only second prize, created a masterpiece that in the eyes of posterity has overshadowed every other achievement in the field of ancient drama. In it he played on certain latent terrors that are part of man's nature in all kinds of societies and at all epochs; terrors whose influence may pervade our lives in ways we scarcely guess ...' These words come from the introduction to Dr Dawe's edition of Oedipus Rex. In an attempt to analyse why this play '...has exercised such a powerful and long-lasting fascination on the human mind' Dr Dawe devotes his introduction to an examination of the content of the story and to the technique displayed by Sophocles in the unfolding of the plot. The commentary deals authoritatively with problems of language and expression. This is an edition for classical scholars, undergraduates, and students in the upper forms of schools. Wasn't what I expected, I thought there'd be more plot insted of it all centered around what I already knew about the story. ( )

Part 1 of my senior English study of tragedy. We're comparing Oedipus, Hamlet, and Death of a Salesman.

Although not as poetic as Heaney, this is a very readable translation. It’s helped along by a very useful introduction that gives a historical context to the play. My one complaint is about the author’s use of footnotes rather than endnotes - the presence of notes at the bottom of each page distracts from the flow of the work, and prevents a smooth understanding of the poetry. Otherwise, very good. ( )

O djeco, sinci drevnog roda Kadmovog,
zbog čega tu po ovaj pòsjedaste svod
ovjènčāvši se lišćem kao onaj stvor
što utječe se bogu. A u isti čas
od tamjanova kâda sav se puši grad
i zapijevke se čuju, jecaji i plač.
Ne želić da mi d r u g i o tom jave glas,
do vašeg eto skupa dođoh glavom sam
ja òd vās sviju nazvan: dični Edip kralj.
Pa, deder, starče, reci, dostojan si tog
da prozboriš u ime ovdje svih:
P r v a a n t i s t r o f a
Ti zagonetku pogodi
i silnu sreću zadobi,
kad Sfingu nama pogubi! 1160
O Zeuse svemilostivi!
Onaj rug krivònoktī!
Ti spase meni ovaj grad
i postade mu branik tvrd,
zavláda njim kao kralj,
i slavu stječe najveću,
da vladaš ovim visokim
gradom našim tebanskim.
