"Lynn Pierce, a fourth-year medical student at Mason Dixon University, thinks she has her life figured out. But when her otherwise healthy boyfriend, Carl, enters the hospital for routine surgery, she doesn't know it's the last time she will see him whole again. Devastated by Carl's death, Lynn searches for answers. Convinced there's more to the story than what the authorities are willing to reveal, Lynn uses all her resources at Mason Dixon--including her initially reluctant lab partner, Edward--to hunt down evidence of medical error or malpractice. What she uncovers, however, is far more disturbing. Hospitals associated with Sentinel Healthcare, including the one attached to Mason Dixon, have unnervingly high rates of unexplained anesthetic complications and patients contracting serious and terminal illness in the wake of routine surgery. When Lynn and Edward begin to receive death threats, they know they're into something bigger than either of them anticipated. They soon enter a desperate race against time for answers before shadowy forces behind Sentinel Healthcare can put a stop to their efforts once and for all" --… (more)

OMG. This book was amazing, even more so by its possibility to become a reality. A scary reality, not the type we would like to live. ( )

With such an interesting storyline, I had high expectations for this novel. I didn't even manage to finish the book. Even for a science student like me, there was way too much terminology; half of the conversations between Lynn and the other faculty members required deep biological explanations. Also, the sleuthing activities of Michael and Lynn were far too unbelievable - how can it be SO easy for someone to look at patient files?! Not only did I feel incredulous about the characters' investigative techniques, I also felt exasperated over the constant reminder of Michael's racial status as an African-American. It was brought up in literally every page and was just incredibly unnecessary. The dialogue between Lynn and Michael did not seem to have any flow to it and was very forced to the point where it was cringe-worthy. I've heard that this author has written quite a few novels in the same genre of medical thrillers but this novel definitely did not make the pass for me! ( )

HOST by Robin Cook
Robin Cook usually writes wonderfully interesting medical mysteries. This one – not so much. The story itself was interesting (innocent patients sent into coma and used as drug production bodies); however, the characters were pretty flat and characterless and the ending just – ended. There was no satisfying conclusion or resolution. Was it terrible – no – it just wasn’t up to his usual excellence.

Again, cook delivers yet another unbelievable medical thriller. He takes drug research to a level I hope never comes to fruition. Enjoyable novel. ( )
