An underappreciated early reader about a Japanese boy who helps his grandfather catch fish with a team of cormorants. The historical background is intriguing, and the story has conflict and depth appropriate for a young reader. This is among the early readers I consider essential reading. (The pictures are very well done, and communicate the tone and the setting especially well. Allen Say is the illustrator. He won a Caldecott for his story Grandfather's Journey.)
