Gilly wouldn’t call herself wicked, exactly…but when you have five little brothers and sisters and live in a run-down boot, you have to get creative to make ends meet. Gilly’s a pretty good thief (if she does say so herself). Until she gets caught. Gilly’s sentenced to three months at Fairy Tale Reform School where all of the teachers are former (super-scary) villains like the Big Bad Wolf, the Evil Queen, and Cinderella’s Wicked Stepmother. Harsh. But when she meets fellow students Jax and Kayla, she learns there’s more to this school than its heroic mission. There’s a battle brewing and Gilly has to wonder: can a villain really change?

I really didn't know what I was getting into with this book, but I really liked it.

Gilly is one of the children of the cobbler that lives in a shoe. She is a thief that tries to get food and things for her family. After being caught for the 3rd time stealing she is sent to Fairy Tale Reform school. The school is run by former villains: Big Bad Wolf, Evil Queen, and Cinderella's Step-Mother. Gilly makes friends with Kyla and Jax. Something is going on at the school and Gilly is in the middle of it.

Gilly reminds me of some of my friends. People that worry about their family more than themselves. The school doesn't seem that bad for a reform school, but something strange is going on. There is a pretty good twist at the end of the book. I can't wait to read the 2nd book in the series. ( )

Very clever concept for those who loved the Hogwarts aspect of Harry Potter. In this fairy tale world, the evil Stepmother of Cinderella has seen the error of her ways and has set up a Fairy Tale Reform School for those who are disobeying the laws of Enchantasia - a land now ruled by the 4 main fairytale princesses Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. The Stepmother Headmistress Flora has recruited some of the former villains to be teachers like the Big Bad Wolf ( now Professor Wolfington) and Snow White's evil queen (now Professor Harlow) and Madame Cleo who made the Little Mermaid's life a misery is now the dance and etiquette teacher.
Gilly Cobbler's family are struggling because magic now makes glass slippers instead of her father's shoemaking business which means they are just above the poverty line. To ensure her brothers and sisters don't starve, Gilly pickpockets the ruling royal classes when they visit the villages , and sells off their fancy hair clips, etc to make money to buy bread for her siblings. On her last occasion she is caught by the police and sent to FTRS (Fairy Tale Reform school) to mend her ways. Once there she meets an odd collection of students who all seem to have one thing in common - they hate the royal family who seem to hold all the wealth and power. Gilly also appears to stumble across a plot to assassinate the princess when they come for a visit - who is behind this? Is it Alva, Sleeping Beauty's nemisis and her pal Gottie (Rapunzel's arch enemy) or is it Headmistress Flora herself, pretending to be reformed but secretly plotting against the ruling class. Gilly and her friends with no magical powers must try and work out what is really happening AND thwart the plot.
Students who loved Hogwarts and all the parallel classes in Harry Potter will adore this as it has little quirks like Miri ( the evil mirror in Snow White) having the job of school announcer and school secretary flitting between windows. There are also magical passageways in the building designed to stop the students trying to escape.
This is for Year 5-6 upward - very easy to read with great character and plot development but could also be read as a stand alone novel. ( )
