I love all things mythological and this seems like the kid friendly version of the Mummy series. Took slightly longer to finish then expected but it's interesting enough with slight plot twists here and there. A good read to fill up during those moments when you are waiting or doing nothing :) ( )

TombQuest Book of the Dead, Book 1 (MichaleNorthrop) New York: Scholastic Inc: 2015: 1st in series

Fantasy fiction, Primary 197 pages

Summary:
In New York Alex struggles with his health and stays at work with his mom in the Egypt section of the museum during the day. Alex takes a turn for the worst and his mom uses an Egyptian spell to save him, while also waking ancient mummies and disappearing herself. Alex, his friend Ren and his moms co-worker Dr. Todtman must put the mummies back to rest. THey are successful in New York but will they be as lucky in London?

Critique:
This novel wakes the dead, literally. Alex and Dr Todtman use magic to help control them and put them back into their tombs. The use of real history and fantasy is a great mix.

Activity:(after)
Create your own spell that could either wake the dead or put them back into their tomb.

12 year old Alex Sennefer struggles through his days with the help of medicine to ease his pain. When it looks like his final time has come, his mom who is an expert on ancient Egypt uses one of the exhibits from the museum she works at, the Book of the Dead, for a last ditch try at saving Alex's life. While it accomplishes that, strange other things start happening- it starts raining blood, there appear to be break-ins at museums world-wide and mummies on exhibit come to life... and Alex's mom disappears. As Alex and his friend Ren go on the quest to find his mom, action awaits them at every turn. This first book in the series holds great appeal to gr. 4-6 and would grab a reluctant reader's attention. ( )

Alex's mother is a curator at the MET in New York. He has a mysterious ailment and when he is at death's door, his mother decides to recite the Secret spells from the Book of the Dead to try and bring him back from the Dead. This works, but it also unleashes the Walking Dead ( known as Walkers) - people who have not been allowed to "cross over" because their souls are tainted by evil. Suddenly Alex is thrown into a world where his mother has disappeared, his best friend Ren is along for the ride and the man he thought was his enemy is actually his friend. There is also an special amulet that belonged to his mother which has magical powers and Alex, ren and the Dr must combine their talents to combat the Stung man who has been resurrected from the dead.
Fast paced and interesting. Younger kids will love this. ( )

From the team that brought you The 39 Clues and Spirit Animals comes a brand-new epic Egyptian adventure!

Nothing can save eleven-year-old Alex Sennefer's life. That's what all the doctors say, but his mother knows it's not true. She knows that the Lost Spells -- the most powerful piece of the Egyptian Book of the Dead -- can crack open a door to the afterlife and pull her son back from the brink. But when she uses the spells, five evil ancients known as the Death Walkers are also brought back to life.

Now terrible things are starting to happen. Mummies are awakening. New York is overrun with scorpion messengers. And worst of all, Alex's mom and the Lost Spells have both disappeared. Alex and his best friend, Ren, will do anything to save his mom and save the world . . . even if that means going head-to-head with a Death Walker who has been plotting his revenge for 3,000 years.

Read the book, then continue the adventure online! Build your own Egyptian maze, hide treasure and protect it with traps, then challenge your friends to play through!

Scholastic launches its latest multiplatform series, this one steeped in ancient Egyptian magic. Twelve-year-old Alex Sennefer is blessed with a mother who would risk everything for him, a best friend, Ren..., and an insatiable hunger for anything having to do with ancient Egypt. ... A lifetime of illness catches up with him, and he is pronounced dead by his doctors—but then Alex is suddenly pulled from the brink.... Unfortunately, Alex isn’t the only one being given a second chance at life. Almost immediately, he and Ren find themselves in a battle of ancient Egyptian proportions and embroiled in a quest to find his mysteriously missing mother and save the world. Like a preteen Indiana Jones and Lara Croft, Alex and Ren make a compelling duo, and Northrop balances pathos and action effectively to engage readers. ... (Adventure. 8-12)

Northrop (Surrounded by Sharks) lays the groundwork for his five-book multiplatform TombQuest series, in which a 12-year-old boy and his know-it-all best friend fight immortal Egyptian menaces while readers participate via online games. ... The story begins leisurely, as Northrop devotes attention to setup and worldbuilding, before shifting into high gear once the nature of the threat is revealed. If this installment doesn’t take full advantage of its Egyptian themes, it remains a fun read with solid action sequences and some gruesome imagery. Ages 8–12.
