A dodici militari condannati a morte per reati gravi viene offerta una possibilità di salvezza: partecipare ad una pericolosa missione nella Francia occupata dai tedeschi al comando del maggiore Reisman. Quest'ultimo riesce a fare di quel gruppo di delinquenti una pattuglia legata da un vero spirito di corpo, e la missione riesce: gli ufficiali tedeschi saltano in aria insieme al castello che li ospitava. Ma della pattuglia di disperati soltanto uno torna a casa.
