His book is an attempt to boil down his knowledge and love of the world's religions and to make a stew that will be tempting to the general reader. For seasoning he has sprinkled his stew freely with poetic phrases which are designed to give to his subject the flavor of mystery. Thus, to take two examples at random, Zoroastrianism is referred to as the "religion of embattled light and darkness", while the Semitic people become "the children of the tent of hair". More than once the seasoning becomes a trifle too sweet for almost any one's taste.
