Great female lead here - I do love my mystery novels and it doesn't seem to matter to me whether they are of the adult variety or targeted to the younger crowd. I very much appreciate a coming of age themes, however, as I remember those years vividly. Author Lily Stuart has written a wonderful young adult mystery, and series, with her "Magpies" that has a great cast of characters. The story of Lilly, a teenage detective who befriends another seeming outcast at school, Si. Together, the two use some interesting methods to solve a mystery that is affecting their school deeply. A very well written story that pulled me along seamlessly and I am definitely going back and reading the first book in this series now. ( ) The Lily S. Teenage Detective books are such a fun and entertaining read. While it's more of a "young adult" book, I'm in my early twenties and really enjoyed this for a bit of a lighter read. I used to read the Nancy Drew books when I was younger, so this brings back some good memories in a way. I love the bits of humor added into the storyline, but also really enjoyed the fact that Stuart touches on some more important issues as well (disabilities, drugs, etc.) I look forward to reading more in this series! I actually haven't come across too many YA detective stories as of late--it seems that everyone is obsessed with dystopian fictions nowadays--so when I saw this, I went for it. I would say that Magpies is pretty special, and can appeal to a wide audience. For one, the main characters are all very different but easy to identify with--after all, they were all just teenagers trying to fit in. Lily is lively, engaging, and I loved her voice and narration throughout the novel. She was definitely my favorite, but from Si, to Jacob, to Matt, and the multitude of other characters and the complex plot line, there's something in this book to enjoy for everyone. The book is pretty fast paced, and it reminded me a bit of when I read the Nancy Drew mysteries when I was younger! This is a book to remember for sure. no reviews | add a review
THE teenage detective is back - and looking for trouble ... Or rather trouble's looking for her. They find each other in the series of little mysteries that start cropping up as soon as Lily's back at school after her brush with death, and meets the new boy, Si. He's different - like Lily is now, with her occasional narcolepsy and frequent inclination to investigate everything. But whereas Lily watches and works things out, Si blurts it all out at the wrong time and in the wrong way. He has Tourettes. He also has a way with rhymes; one in particular that increasingly makes sense to Lily as the mysteries mount up and a gang of drug pushers target the school and her friends with potentially lethal consequences. One for sorrow, two for joy ... But joy is no longer a girl's name nor the opposite of sad, and the magpies the rhyme is about are not just black and white birds that like stealing treasure. They're far more deadly than that... Deadly intrigue with a ton of teenage humour thrown in... Magpies is the second book in the Lily S: Teenage Detective series. No library descriptions found. |
