A legacy of a house and a box full of papers. The small house in Yorkshire didn't sell quickly. Missing her busy life in Scotland, where her husband runs the family farm, the narrator finds that writings left by her late aunt help pass the time. They tell of a more innocent age, when Aunt Mary was a child, a teenager and a young woman. A meeting with an old work colleague leads to suspicion that the fiance lost at sea in the Second World War was not the only love of young Mary's life.
