Very tight writing, professional. The story was good and unique as were the characters. A couple of instances where tense, confrontational dialogue felt a bit stilted but very good as a whole. I did feel like the story started to bog down a bit as he continued to climb the tower, but I never lost interest. ( )

Earth has undergone deleterious climate change and pollution, its population now dwindling to what may be the last sizeable city at the foot of the remaining functional space elevator, its slums, and sparsely populated wastelands.

Those who could fled to the space colonies. Most of those who couldn't, hope to follow. But that requires either insane amounts of money, or outworlder sponsorship.

The protagonist has neither and when sponsorship comes seemingly out of nowhere, he expects to face a gauntlet on his way in and up after his botched attempt to hike a ride out years ago for himself and the girl he loved indirectly resulted in many deaths.

And a gauntlet it is, ladden with memories, on his way up with cops after him, thugs after his ticket out, in the company of an interesting girl he agrees to take up in exchange for the cash he'll need to help him escape and not be sent back immediately for lack of funds. ( )
