"Dangerous and driven private investigator Charlie Parker returns in the latest gripping thriller of internationally bestselling author John Connolly's series, in which ungodly fears haunt a strange and isolated community. Jerome Burnel was once a hero. He intervened to prevent multiple killings, and in doing so destroyed himself. His life was torn apart. He was imprisoned, brutalized. But in his final days, with the hunters circling, he tells his story to private detective Charlie Parker. He speaks of the girl who was marked for death, but was saved; of the ones who tormented him, and an entity that hides in a ruined stockade. Parker is not like other men. He died, and was reborn. He is ready to wage war. Now he will descend upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut, and face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation, and murder. All in the name of the being they serve. All in the name of the Dead King"-- "Private investigator Charlie Parker descends upon a strange, isolated community called the Cut, and will face down a force of men who rule by terror, intimidation, and murder"--… (more)

Thanks to Atria Books via NetGalley for providing me an ARC e-book in exchange for an honest review. [b: A Time of Torment|25930352|A Time of Torment (Charlie Parker, #14)|John Connolly|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1452848988s/25930352.jpg|45823898] by [a: John Connolly|38951|John Connolly|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1201288913p2/38951.jpg] is an excellent novel. I understand it is 14th in a series, but does stand alone.

The supernatural Charlie Parker and his earth bound partners have what it takes to bring down true evil. So many parts of "A Time of Torment" screamed truth.

The Cut and The Dead King are fictional parts played in this [a: John Connolly|38951|John Connolly|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1201288913p2/38951.jpg] book. Argument can be made that these haints appear in flashes on the peripheral of our society. Especially in any 'small town' population.

I loved the adventure and travel into and out of dimensions which do seem to exist.

Thank you for this experience. Whew. ( )

No 14 in the series and it's starting to get a little tired... ( )

Another great story in the series. Takes place in both Maine and West Virginia, so you get the whole backwoods hillbilly angle as well.
The usual supernatural elements are here along with a Charlie Parker with a purpose and lethal resolve to right the wrongs imposed on innocent people. ( )

I came into this series totally blind. I received an invitation from the publisher to read it, and the description sounded the type of book I enjoy. I am not sure my review can do it justice considering it is book # 14 in a series and I have not read the first 13. In a way the story stands on it's own. In book 14 Charlie Parker tracks down those who tormented Jerome Burnel, who has just been released from prison. This leads him to a group of seriously creepy people known as the Cut.

John Connelly is an incredible story teller. I loved the suspense and the supernatural aspects. I can just tell there are key points I may be missing out on that must have been addressed earlier in the series.

I am sure fans of the series will enjoy it, and I plan to look into the earlier books 5 stars from me.

I received this book from NetGalley in return for my honest review. I devoured this book. I only wish that I had discovered this series prior to reading the latest book. The characters drew me in but I felt I was missing things, obviously, having missed the beginning of their tales. I will definitely read the other books, and am now a fan of the series. ( )
