First, it teaches many facts about sunflowers. The writing is very engaging for an informational text and the vocabulary is simple for young readers. On page 5, the author adds a fact that will hook readers; she writes, “Sunflowers can grow taller than people.” I was hooked and wanted to find out more about sunflowers. The text goes on to discuss the life cycle of a plant. Examples of simple vocabulary and simple sentences can be found throughout the book, but on page 10, the author takes valuable information and writes it simple. She writes, “At the tops of the stem, a small bud forms. During the day, the bud and leaves bend toward the sun.” I also like that she bolds the important words and they can be found in the glossary in the end of the book. I also like the book because there are so many visuals to represent the writing on the pages. On page 15 when the author writes about the tiny flowers in the center of the sunflower, there is a close up of the center of the sunflower. The big idea of this book was to teach students about sunflowers, whether it be interesting facts or the life cycle of a sunflower. It was a very engaging and informational book which I really enjoyed. ( ) no reviews | add a review
