Mary of Bethany is not the same as Mary Magdalene. Nor do the Gospels identify the sinful women who washed Jesus feet with her tears as Mary Magdalene. This idea was propagated by Pope Gregory the Great, who is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Churches. Saint Gregory's idea never caught on in the Orthodox Churches, however.
