Georgie the cat loved parties - he loved having all of his friends over, offering them delicious treats (especially cake!), and showing them a good time. So when his birthday came along, he thought it the ideal time to host the biggest bash ever. Unfortunately, his plans hit a snag when all of his friends, from Feta the dog to Lester the rat, seemed unable to attend. Dispirited after a day of issuing unsuccessful invitations, Georgie returned home, only to discover that his friends had a surprise in store for him...

This debut picture-book from author/illustrator Ruth Chan is absolutely adorable, featuring a sweet and heartwarming tale of friendship and birthday parties, and charming artwork that captures its feline hero's emotional ups and downs. I enjoyed the humor here, especially the various excuses given by Georgie's friends to get out of attending his party - one needs to fold socks, while another can't make it because the sidewalk is on the wrong side - and although I knew just where the story was leading, still enjoyed getting there. Recommended to anyone looking for entertaining stories for younger children - I myself am pleased that this is just the first of Georgie's stories! ( )
