This volume focuses on the intellectual and educational life of Baghdad during the apex of Abbasid culture from about the eighth to the tenth centuries C.E. It covers a wide range of religious and scientific disciplines, groups, and movements that characterized the production, transmission, and transformation of knowledge in this city during this period. Poetry, literature, the transmission of prophetic reports, historiography, astrology and astronomy, Christian and Muslim (school) education, the Syriac to Arabic translation movement, and Jewish learning are some of the topics discussed in the volume. In doing so, the volume generates insight into the various contexts that defined scholarship in medieval Baghdad. A central aim is to contribute to a better understanding of Baghdad's circles of learning and patterns of patronage, as well as of the relation between Abbasid institutions and the dispensing of religious and scientific education. The volume should benefit anyone interested in Islamic history and civilization, as well as to those with an interest in the history of education.
