I participated in this fun operetta at the Verdi, Minnesota public school on December 22, 1949. I was in the second grade.

The scene for this forty-five minute operetta is Santa's toy shop on Christmas Eve. Santa departs, leaving Mrs. Claus with a number of toys that were left behind. Mrs. Claus devises a plan, using her Wishing Cap, to call the Queen of Fairies to wake the toys to life so that they might have some fun and be happy. After merriment was had by the toys, the Queen takes the Wishing Cap in payment and returns the toys back to the shelves in Santa's shop. (p. 4)

My role was that of a "Top"; one of eight. My mother made the costume for me out of the color blue crape paper. Directions for making the top were; "One long straight piece of material, or of several, simply gathered at top and bottom on elastic; no holes for arms; only heads and feet seen." (p. 3) (In thinking about this, I believe that Mother made all the "Top"costumes, but I am not 100% certain.)

Twelve songs are included in the operetta. Song six is "We're bright little Happy Tops." Lyrics are: "A right Merry Christmas to everyone here! To get here we've come on the hop! We spin and we spin and we spin and we spin, You see we can't possibly stop! We hope to be gifts to some good little boys, We hope they will like us lots! Oh turn and turn and turn us again, We're bright little happy tops!" (pp. 15-16)

I am so happy to rediscovered this work by Mrs. Christie. My copy was found on the used book market and is in near mint condition. ( )
