I felt the characters were 2-Dimensional and this was a very easy read. It should not be compared tot he False Prince trilogy, but I am doing it anyways. A strong female character that has a quirky male friend. You can see the budding romance and the Evil Ruler of the kingdom next door, she just as 2 Dimensional as the other characters. Not to Pleased with the book. . . ( )

A lethal plague infects the land, those suffering from it are sent to exile in the Colony, never to be seen of again. Ani and Weevil are river folk, kidnapped by wardens and brought to the Colony. Fighters at their very core, they work to gain their freedom and expose the secrets behind the Scourge. I got sucked into the story and cheered for the plucky, determined, loyal brave characters. ( )

Ani Mells, (a tomboy from the small, poorer end of the island of Keldan) is shocked when she is unexpectedly captured by the governor's wardens and forced to submit to a test for the deadly Scourge that has been sweeping through Keldan. She is even more surprised when the test results come back positive (as the scourge has not reached their part of the island), and she is sent to Attic Island, a former prison turned refuge and quarantine colony for the ill. The Scourge's victims, Ani now among them, can only expect to live out short, painful lives there. However, Ani quickly discovers that she doesn't know the whole truth about the Scourge or the Colony. She's been caught in a devious plot and with the help of her best friend, Weevil, Ani means to uncover just what is actually going on. But will she and Weevil survive long enough to do so? The Scourge is a tale of adventure, intrigue and courage of small town folk to save their small town from the oppressive bigger town. ( )

The aspect that I enjoyed the most about this book is that it is a stand alone, not part of a series book. That's so rare lately that I just really appreciated no cliff hangers or incentives to wait for a year for the continuation. That, in itself, was refreshing.
Ani Mells and her friend Weevil, both healthy River People, accidentally get captured by wardens from the nearby town, and are subjected to Scourge testing. Much to her surprise, Ani tests positive for the Scourge, a deadly contagious virus, and is sent to a quarantine colony on Attic island. She fully intends to be the first survivor of the Scourge and to find a way to get off the island, but it's not going to be easy.
Ani is a plucky likeable character who doesn't depend on luck to get herself out of the trouble that she seems to find regularly! ( )
