Dex Delphi and the Gold Mine by Alistair Rutherford - good

I'll put my cards on the table first up: I've known Ali for 24 years now, ever since we worked together when I first moved to Scotland. At some point over these years, he made the jump from IT to become a full time writer and is now a professional screen writer. I've read a number of his early short stories and seen various plays etc, but I think this is his first foray into writing fiction/stories for publication.

As a novella of the cosy crime/thriller genre it moves along at a cracking pace with a nice level of humourous banter and I really enjoyed it. Nice and light and entertaining.

I do have to admit that I think it shows that he is really a screen writer. Snappy dialogue but not much character background. I can't really tell you what anyone looks like or what their back story is. Not that it mattered to the story at all. It was still a nice quick read and a great antidote to ploughing through The Goldfinch for over a month!
