Nel maggio del 1944 una divisione dell'esercito tedesco comandata dal generale Hoffmann, al quale appartiene anche il sergente Rolf Saxen, è costretta dai sovietici ad una precipitosa ritirata. Segnalato da un suo superiore per una punizione, Saxen si vede invece concedere da Hoffmann una licenza di due settimane che trascorre a Parigi. Ma la licenza viene interrotta dalla notizia dello sbarco degli alleati in Normandia. Convinto che la Germania abbia ormai perso la guerra Hoffmann gli affida l'incarico di preparare un incontro fra generali tedeschi ed emisari alleati per negoziare la resa. L'incontro dovrebbe avvenire in contemporanea con un attentato mortale a Hitler, ma l'attentato fallisce ed il dittatore nazista scatena una epurazione terribile fra i suoi ranghi.
