It doesn't really stand alone. ( ) I think this book is a mystery of sorts, a romantic mystery, a genre that I think fits very well with Levy's writing style. What I love about Levy's novels is the fact that each of them has a lesson. For example, in another of his novels, My friends, my lovers (original title: Mes amis, mes amours), the lesson is that real friends are there for each other always. The book is light, easy to read. The ending is kind of surprising, but that is because the book has a second part, The First Night (Le Premier Nuit) which I am currently reading. I just hope someone will make it into a movie. An astrophysicist searching for the origins of the Universe at an observatory in Chile. A feisty archaeologist searching for the origins of humankind in Ethiopia. A chance discovery of a fragment of pottery with astonishing design and potentially earth-shattering consequences for science. A global race to locate and recover other fragments of this amazing artefact. The awakening of a shadowy international organisation intent on stopping these discoveries. A love story. Shades of Da Vinci but, unlike Brown, within fifty pages Marc Levy succeeds in creating a cast of credible central characters embarked on a gripping journey and embroiled in a genuine mystery. Quality holiday reading, ideal for my annual three-week tour round France, so much so that on finishing it I rushed immediately to buy the sequel, La Première Nuit. no reviews | add a review
