Great idea, pretty well executed.

There are some imbalances - foremost of which is the irregular way gender is handled. Men and women age differently, and it is pronounced throughout and seldom feels even-handed. Some of the selections are too brief in both length and depth. The way the 90's are depicted with the color black, with an ever-fading number becoming buried in the image, feels dismal and like a younger person's depiction.

All in all - my rating comes from the joy of concept. I'd like to see longer selections that represent both male and female perspectives and I'd like for those perspectives to be selections from people who have experience of those ages, not just popular authors taking a guess at what they must be like (this only happens sometimes, it should be noted - and the selections are never outright poor or apparently misrepresentative... obviously some years, like 0, aren't going to be possible to handle in this way).

The shifting of fonts and color was confusing and detracted from the experience. They are purely subjective, in a project whose attempt is to formulate a rough objectivity of the years and decades.

A for concept. Beautiful concept! C for editorial review. C for visual representation. B for selections, and missing out on the fact that gender differences are so pronounced for many of the ages. I'd love to see a second attempt at this book taken. One with a chapter from each age, perhaps with 3 selections from both men and women for each. Also, an objective visual language and consistent approach to presentation.

Despite its flaws, I hope to visit this book at each birthday for a peek at the views therein.

NOTE: why does Goodreads use a spell-check feature that does not recognizes the word "misrepresentative"? ( )

This book is very pretty. It's a collection of quotes from authors (novelists and otherwise) about every year of life from zero to one hundred. Some are stretching it a bit, and not all of them are actually about being said age, but it's an interesting undertaking nonetheless. Perhaps something worth bringing out on people's birthdays. ( )
