This is the story of a baby sea other and how its mother takes care of it and raises it, just like kids mothers do. Eventually baby sea otter will be able to do things on his own, just like you.

Betty Tatham takes us through the life of a sea otter from its birth through to its own foray into motherhood. While full of useful facts, the text reads like a fictional narrative making this work as a read-aloud for older kids. Joan Paley illustrates using lovely cut-paper collages highly reminiscent of Steve Jenkins' work - in fact when I pulled this book out, I thought it was Jenkins' until I saw the illustrator's name. The paper Paley uses is textured and hand-painted allowing for a watercolor feel to the blues and greens that represent the ocean and land masses while the brown otter pieces seem full of hair. While there's no index, there is a note in the back with further information about sea otters.

Used for Under the Sea Tons of Fun 2nd-3rd grade program in September 2009. ( )

Hynes Library:
A simplistic tale of a otter's life cycle, a little too long for a read aloud for younger children, but great for older students. ( )
