Sin duda una figura clave en la historiografía del
arte contemporánea, Aby Warburg ejerció una
considerable influencia a través no sólo de sus
publicaciones, sino también del Instituto que lleva su
nombre y de sus discípulos más destacados, estudiosos de la
talla de Erwin Panowsky o Kenneth Clark. Resultado de
varios años de minucioso trabajo de investigación y selección,
Aby Warburg. Una biografía intelectual da cuenta de
la incansable tarea de este notable humanista a lo largo de
cuatro décadas. A partir de sus diarios, cartas e innumerables
notas, E. H. Gombrich reconstruye sistemáticamente
su trayectoria desde su juventud, y su temprana insatisfacción
respecto a la interpretación entonces comúnmente
aceptada del Renacimiento, hasta su último proyecto,
frustrado en 1929 por su muerte, y que bajo el título de
«Mnemosyne», habría de recoger las imágenes y los símbolos
conservados en la memoria del hombre occidental. El
presente volumen recoge una extensa bibliografia relativa
a la obra de Warburg asi como una memoria sobre la
historia de su biblioteca, a cargo de F. Saxl
