read not long after it's release, in part due to the record-setting advance given to the first time author.[return][return]And it's.....ok. Not brilliant (this was a novice after all!) but it could have been a lot lot worse. There was the occasional turn of phrase that I thought "Ooooh, could have done that better", but not many.[return][return]In short, a girl and her horse have an accident, and the mother seeks out a renowned "Horse Whisperer" to help the horse recover. In doing so, he helps heal the emotional and psyhcological scars that both the daughter and mother have built up over the years. ( )

I read this book years ago, around 1999. It was your average read...good but just a little slow. I remember I then wanted to be a horse whisper after that, but all I had was a fish...so began my whispering... ( )

I would give the story in the book that includes Grace, her horse Pilgrim, & Tom Booker 5 stars. However the forced adultery just for the sake of having sex in the book lost me and I found it below the quality of the book. I would give those parts 1 star Don't get me wrong I like sex in a book but I did not like the feel of this. The outright cheating just lost me. And the ending felt lost to me as well. Feels like he wrote himself into a corner and went the cheap way out.

If you love horses you will probably like this book. ( )

Epigraph
Pursue not the outer entanglements,
Dwell not in the inner void;
Be serene in the oneness of things,
And dualism vanishes by itself.

Book description
Two carefree teenagers go for an afternoon ride, never knowing that horror lies beyond the hill.
As they crest it and their horses skate down the thick slope they heard the horn of an 18-wheeler on the road below....

When Grace awoke in her hospital bed she discovered they had amputated her leg, her dreams of a career in the showring dead.
Then she found they had locked her beloved horse in a dark, filthy stall - his injuries, nearly as serious as hers, untended. He had gone savagely wild from the mistreatment, and she was now terrified of her beloved horse, as well as broken in spirit due to her shattered body.
Then her mother sees an ad and ignores all advice in an attempt to save them both...

    A CHILD WOUNDED IN BODY AND SPIRIT
    A HORSE DRIVEN MAD BY PAIN
    A WOMAN FIGHTING TO SAVE THEM BOTH

Read the book or watch the movie. Don't do both or you will be trying to break something.
