I have to admit that I knew very little about the lady before acquiring the book other that than that she was involved in the Republican struggle and was subsequently a Fianna Fáil Senator. She was more than that, however. From an atypical background she studied nursing and was caught up in the events of 1916. She remained active throughout the War of Independence in Dublin and her native Sligo. Her subsequent career in politics but also in other causes such as the Irish Red Cross, the Irish Nurses Organisation and campaigning for equal pay for women are very interesting.
