Enjoyed this immensely. Up to Gedge's quality writing standard. Evocative of ancient Egypt. The horror creeps in quietly, little by little. Prince Khaemwaset of Egypt is a physician, a skilldful magician, and restores tombs. He hopes to find The Scroll of Thoth [the ibis-headed god of wisdom], which is able to confer immortality. He explores a tomb in Saqqara, a necropolis. When he and his family meet a mysterious family, his loving, close-knit family is broken asunder. Khaemwaset is obsessively lustful for the woman, Tbubui. She has her own agenda and pursues it. As soon as the two families met, I got goosebumps until the end of the story and was up until 3 a.m. several nights ago reading it. His family were well-rounded characters, each with his or her unique personality.

Highly recommended! ( )

A very intriguing read. It started rather interesting, then tapered off into what seemed to be a simple telling of every-day life of the main character. I say 'seemed' because it really only seemed to be that shallow - and before you know it you find yourself in an ever complicating web of a Black Widow... and in the end you're wondering, "How did that happen?!" The depth, pace and ever growing sense of foreboding increased with every page until I couldn't put the book down and found myself racing through the last pages, because I simply HAD TO KNOW how it ends!! The cool air was a welcome shock. Khaemwaset stepped gingerly into the tomb, aware aware as always that his was the first foot to be placed in the grey sand floor since the mourners, themselves long dead, had backed up the stairs before the sweepers and turned in relief to the blazing sun and hot desert wind many centuries before.
