Bestselling author Ashlyn Macnamara, hailed by Jennifer McQuiston as "a born storyteller," introduces the strapping, audacious outlaws of the Bastard Brotherhood in this enchanting tale of forbidden love between supposedly sworn enemies.   Though she is intended for the king, Calista Thorne picks up a crossbow to defend her ancestral home, Blackbriar Keep, from a gang of landless knights. She even manages to sink a poison-tipped arrow into their commander, who survives long enough to conquer the Keep and claim Calista for his own. Now, with her father's life at stake, Calista must nurse the brigand back to health, and the strangest thing happens: She finds herself fascinated by his tautly muscled body, and enthralled by his hotly whispered demands.   Ever since his father's death, the fearsome warrior they call Torch has been consumed by his quest for revenge. Taking Blackbriar Keep is the first step in that plan, and--by the three gods--it won't be the last. But after taking one look into Calista's smoldering gray eyes, Torch discovers a passion nobler than retribution. He will fulfill his destiny and take her from the usurper king, even in his weakened state. For with Calista's love, no man has ever felt more powerful. Praise for Destined for a King "A sweeping romance infused with Celtic-style earth magic, a bastard outlaw fighting to regain his throne--and a quietly fierce heroine who will lead the way. This story reads so well as both fantasy and historical romance.

Heroine Calista’s betrothal to the King goes awry when her home is taken by Torch, the enemy of the King. Torch is only doing what he feels is right and just. Reclaiming what is his by right.

Their story has been long ordained and Torch must make that clear to the woman that’s his destiny.

Both characters were well written and complexity of their situation is well explored and presented to the reader.

If you love your romance to be sprinkled with a bit of magic and mystery, as well as action and some sensuality that’s way off the charts, grab this story as soon as you can.

Touchstones and touch--destiny awakened!

When the castle you call home is attacked by roving, landless knights, you either squeal and hide, or pick up a weapon and fight. Calista Thorne chooses to defend Blackbriar Keep. She shoots Torch, the commander of the marauding group with a cross bow. Torch however is no common landless knight. He is the son of the slain rightful king. He is seeking to take back the throne. Blackfriars Keep is the beginning. Now Torch is ill and Callista must nurse him back to health in order to keep her father alive. Calista's mother informs Calista that she and her father have been experimenting with kingsbane. No wonder Torch is not healing. Calista is forced to fight for her enemy's life and her father's.
Torch needs to marry Calista. He has foreseen that she is part of his destiny. As the healing process happens, as they share close quarters, they are drawn to each other. Theirs is a passion with an underlying harmony rarely seen.
When the false King responds to Blackfriars being captured, Calista and Torch are once more fighting for their lives, and now their joined destiny. Their quest goes beyond the here and now to things drawn on from the past.
I'm looking forward to the continuing story.

Calista and Torch's story is a great mix of adventure, romance and fantasy that kept my attention and has me longing for more. With medieval fighting and challenges to the throne, a layered love story emerges. Macnamara proves she's a thorough story teller, who closes all gaps with answers and resolutions, but she's also left room for another book to see this storyline to a close.
