Rhythmic and rhyming, this story tells of Hawaiian instruments and dance. It is a lullaby to go to sleep with. It has a calming feel. The illustrations are beautiful, cultural Hawaiian style - flowers, scenery, and people; they fill the pages in full color. The sky is dark blue to indicate night; the text is in light yellow which is easy to read. This book would be good for cultural lesson, music, and read aloud for rest time.

This book is a beloved favorite of the students in my class. They enjoy the rhymyic pattern of the text and get really involved reading along with me. This story gives children an inside view of the life and culture of the hawaiian people. They used hawaiian words such as " pu'ili" and "pahu" and "keike" meaning little one. The illustrations are the strength of this book and the use of movement in the pictures brings this book to life. Illustraions on the hawaiina dancers, their music instruments, and their use of their hands gives this children book a poetic flow to it. ( )

This is a story of a mother rocking her daughter to sleep through the various elements of the island of Hawaii. I would use this book to introduce children to another culture that is part of the United States. I think this is more appropriate to be used in homes more then in a classroom. ( )
