Bodine Longbow is the manager of her family's resort in Western Montana, she has a lot to do and not enough time to do it. Into her life comes her childhood crush Callen Skinner, now grown up and wanting to settle down again.
However, coincidentally with his arrival back, a young woman's body is found.
Bodine's family remember another missing woman, Alice, Bodine's aunt. Her tale is told as a secondary plot. It's full of pain.
Damn you Smart Bitches, having recently listened to a podcast about the In Death series I noticed the dearth of non-white characters... Still the story was good. ( )

The story begins in 1995 when twenty-one year old Alice Bodine is hitchhiking her way back to the family ranch outside of Missoula, Montana. She had left three years earlier right after her sister Maureen's wedding in the hopes of building a career in Hollywood. She still has some miles to go and night is falling when a man in a pick-up offers her a ride. She doesn't know that he is going to kidnap her, rape her, imprison her and abuse her for more than twenty-five years.

Then the story switches to the present day. The Bodine Ranch and Resort is thriving under the care of Bodine Longbow, Alice's niece. She and her family including her siblings, parents, grandmother and great-grandmother are a tight knit group. Bodine doesn't miss Alice since she never knew her but knows her grandmother still thinks about her often and wonders what happened to her.

Meanwhile, Cal Skinner comes home. Cal grew up on a neighboring ranch and was her older brother Chase's best friend. He did build a career in Hollywood managing horses but is back now. Bodine has a crush on him when she was young but he didn't think of her as anything more than his best friend's little sister. Things have changed now that they are both grown up.

Before they can do more than looking longingly at each other, a young woman employee of the resort is murdered. Then a second young woman is kidnapped and her body found on the resort. One of the Sheriff's deputies who has had a hate on for Cal since childhood is convinced that Cal is the killer and harasses him.

Before the real killer is found, a brutalized and damaged Alice manages to escape from her kidnapper and her re-entry into the family not only changes the family dynamic but links the current murders to her kidnapping many years earlier.

This was an engaging story with Alice's story woven into it in a series of flashbacks. It also has a number of romances since not only Bodine but her brother's Chase and Rory also find romantic partners. The story has a number of Roberts's signature details in the strong family relationships among the Bodine-Longbows and the strong friendships among the younger generation. This one also has a great setting and talks a lot about the beauty of Montana. Nora Roberts fans won't want to miss this engaging story. ( )

Nora Roberts has the uncanny ability to make you love her characters, their jobs, and their lives. In Come Sundown, Roberts explores the world of the western ranch/resort. Bodine Longbow is the boss of the resort and runs it efficiently. When Callen Skinner returns after wrangling horses in Hollywood, Bodine finds a reason to make time for him and his adorable horse, Sundown. In the background of Bodine's story is Alice, her aunt, who was taken captive after spending years away from her family and finally coming home. Alice spends the next several years becoming dependent on her captor and giving him children that he takes away from her leaving her alone and unloved. When Alice accidentally escapes and is found, a manhunt begins involving Bodine's entire family.
Once again, Nora Roberts weaves a story of a large, happy family coming to terms with loss, sorrow, and the depths of love. ( )

I loved this story. Set on a ranch/resort in Montana owned by the Bodine family. Bodine Longbow runs the resort and her brothers work at both the ranch & the resort. A aunt that Bodine never met has been missing for many years. The story goes back and forth between what is happening on the ranch and what is happening with Aunt Alice. Callen Skinner comes to work for Bodine at about the time two women are murdered near the ranch. A twisted tale reveals some dark things have been happening close to the ranch for years. A good read! Best-selling authors are best-selling authors for a reason --- they write good books! Nora Roberts is such an author. Ms. Roberts’ latest book is a very good book.
The Bodine/Longbows seem to live a story-book life – they have a large ranch and a successful resort. Both businesses are run by the family – and everything seems fine. However, as we all know, nothing is as it seems. Years before, one of the Bodine daughters ran away, and never returned. Almost thirty years later, the family still misses her. The reader knows that she didn’t just run away – she was abducted and has been held prisoner for all of those years. How the family finds their way back together is just one subplot of the book – there is also the mystery surrounding the murder of two young women in the area. The author tells a great story – one that keeps you reading.
The characters in this book are believable – the setting is spectacular. There is action – and, of course, romance. What more could you ask for? (Maybe a cup of coffee to enjoy while reading it!)
I won this book as a GoodReads Giveway in exchange for a fair review. ( )
