"A generations-spanning family of psychics--both blessed and burdened by their abilities--must use their powers to save themselves from the CIA, the local mafia, and a skeptic hell-bent on discrediting them in this hilarious, tender, magical novel about the invisible forces that bind us. The Telemachus family is known for performing inexplicable feats on talk shows and late-night television. Teddy, a master conman, heads up a clan who possess gifts he only fakes: there's Maureen, who can astral project; Irene, the human lie detector; Frankie, gifted with telekinesis; and Buddy, the clairvoyant. But when, one night, the magic fails to materialize, the family withdraws to Chicago where they live in shame for years. Until: As they find themselves facing a troika of threats (CIA, mafia, unrelenting skeptic), Matty, grandson of the family patriarch, discovers a bit of the old Telemachus magic in himself. Now, they must put past obstacles behind them and unite like never before. But will it be enough to bring The Amazing Telemachus Family back to its amazing life?"--… (more)

Que libro más redondo.

Personajes muy carismáticos y muy diferentes entre si, con un ritmo endiablado y un final de medalla de oro.

Gregory que bueno eres. ( )

"Spoonbenders" by Daryl Gregory earns a solid five stars, overcoming a sluggish start that initially left me uncertain. As the narrative gained traction, however, the story transformed into a captivating tapestry of emotions. Gregory's skillful storytelling weaved together heartfelt moments, clever humor, and poignant tragedy, creating a rich and multifaceted experience.

The novel's ability to elicit both laughter and tears showcases Gregory's narrative prowess. The characters, once seemingly ordinary, evolved into a cast that felt like old friends by the final chapters. The blend of humor and tragedy provided a nuanced exploration of the human experience, making the journey through "Spoonbenders" both engaging and profoundly impactful.

In the end, "Spoonbenders" proved to be a masterfully crafted narrative that transcended its initial pacing challenges. The emotional resonance, coupled with a perfect balance of wit and poignancy, left me with a lasting appreciation for Gregory's storytelling prowess. This is a book that lingers in the heart and mind, earning its well-deserved five-star rating. ( )

Gregory is always a treat. Weird, funny, and offbeat but with a cast of characters that make you want to turn the page. A mashup of supernatural and the mafia. How can you go wrong. ( )

I loved it. The characters were flawed and quirky. The story was fun. Also the fact it was set in the nineties and had those references was gravy. I had a hard time putting it down. ( )

He launches us straight into the agreeably complex present-day web of the family, leaving us to puzzle out all the relationships. Then he delivers the backstory in segments throughout the novel (mimicking, one suspects, Buddy’s own flights of atemporality). Before too long, the reader is firmly in command of all the necessary material, and yet still experiencing many more revelations. It’s a technique that not every writer could pull off well, but Gregory does.

Of course, without great characters and emotionally resonant doings, this fancy format would be useless. But you can count on Gregory for those essential features as well. Every person in the book practically jumps off the page; the dialogue is often hilarious, and always pertinent and revelatory; and the amount of action is intense, including an occult heist à la Richard Kadrey’s latest thrillers.
