Some fine short pieces on John Cowper Powys, Mervyn Peake, P G. Wodehouse, Anthony Burgess, and others. I have learned more from Robertson Davies, Anthony Burgess, Gore Vidal, Robert Lynd, Petre Mais, than I have from scores of other book-chatters. If not for R. D. I might have missed out on John Cowper Powys, Mervyn Peake, Gwyn Thomas, and countless others. I attended several lectures at Stratford, Ontario and other venues. Along with Thomas E. Porter (who helped me understand, according to my lights, Shakespeare, and some few others) Rob: Davies were the greatest influences on my life as a student of books, and life. ( )

A voice, certainly -- any book is a voice -- but why from the Attic?
Quotations
[Theodore] Hook was a brilliant wit ... He mixed in aristocratic society ... he would, on request, sit down at the piano and improvise a song in which he managed to bring in the names of every person present, and make puns on them.
