"Truluv is a moving novel about three people who have lost the person they love most, and must find their way back to happiness. Arthur, a widower, meets Maddy, an angry and friendless teenage girl, while visiting his late wife at the cemetary, where he goes every day for lunch. Against all odds, the two strike up a friendship that pulls them out of a serious rut. They band together with Arthur's nosy neighbor Lucille, to create lives that are truly worth living. Proving that life's most precious moments are sweeter when shared, they go from strangers, to friends, to an untraditional but loving family. Betrayal, loneliness, romance and family are at the heart of this honey of a book, a must-read for fans of Elizabeth Berg's early work. This is a story about life being affirmed at all ages, old and young, and about finding hapiness when hope seems lost. Readers will laugh, cry, and love Truluv"--… (more)

I remember now why I used to love reading Elizabeth Berg. She just makes me feel so deeply, expansively and joyfully ... human. ( )

The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg is touchingly sweet story. We follow the lives of Arthur, recently widowed, as he makes a daily visit to the cemetary visiting his wife. He meets a young girl Maddy and their friendship is the crust of this tear jerker. Neighbor Lucille also enters into this gorgeously written novel. Although we’ve heard this tale before, Berg is able to take us out of the predictable clichés that are the downfall of these type of novels. ( )

Read this sweet, funny and heart-warming book in one setting. An 85-year old widowed man named Arthur meets a 18 year old girl named Maddy in the cemetery one day and a unique friendship is born.
Arthur's next door neighbor, a bossy widowed woman named Lucille enters the picture and these three become a family of sorts. They bring happiness and fulfillment into each other lives. for fans of "A Man Called Ove." loved it. pulled all the heart strings. ( )

A sweet book that reminds us of how life can be between age groups. ( )

This story reminded me of [b:A Man Called Ove|18774964|A Man Called Ove|Fredrik Backman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405259930l/18774964._SY75_.jpg|21619954] a lot, so I was a bit sceptic at the beginning. But then it went a different way and wasn't just about the old Arthur. Actually, we have three main characters here - Arthur, who lost his wife and leaves alone with his cat; Lucile, the elderly teacher, who lives next to Arthur and bakes all the time; and Maddy - an 18-year-old girl, who likes spending time at the cemetery and finds herself in a difficult situation.

The story is maybe a bit cheesy, but it wasn't too much. It felt rather real and cosy. At the same time, the characters were not perfect. They, just like all real people, have their bad sides and have to put up with other people's annoying qualities. And it was very interesting to read about. This story of finding a new, real, family is very true and heart-warming. ( )

The life-affirming messages are far from subtle, and the fine line between sensitivity and sentimentality is often breached.

Aims for profound but settles for pleasant.

Epigraph
We all know that something is eternal. And it ain't houses and it ain't names, and it ain't earth, and it ain't even the stars---everybody knows in their bones that something is eternal, and that something has to do with human beings.
---THORNTON WILDER, Our Town

Quotations
It is in people, to be entertained by cruelty.
People who don't feel cared for are not always comfortable being cared for.
What is it that makes a family? Certainly no document does, no legal pronouncement or accident of birth. No, real families come from choices we make about who we want to be bound to, and the ties to such families live in our hearts.
A man doesn't always make room in his life for appreciating certain things that seem to be under women's auspices, but there's a satisfaction in some of them.
A promise is a promise, even if it's only one you made to yourself.
