Daughter of the manse Ishbel Montrose had always wanted to become a missionary, so she was thrilled to leave 1920s Edinburgh for a post in Shanghai, accompanied by Gordon Campbell, a member of her father's church. Settling into her new home in China, she makes friends with Lian Chen and Mei Li, the daughters of a local tea merchant, and with Adam Butler, the Chens' American accountant.
