The Weeping Angel is the story of Hubert Kelley, the author’s father who at the age of seventeen lied about his age and enlisted in the Army in World War I. Told through a series of personal letters and poems written by Hubert to his family between 1917-19, the reader gets a first hand glimpse into the resilience and courage of this young man while also experiencing what life was like in World War I France. What is remarkable is that the author had only met her father once. When she came upon these letters, it was like she was meeting her father for the first time. Through these letters, we see an innovative young man who loved his family and had a flair for writing. He addressed everything from the mundane aspects of daily Army life during the war to the horrors of combat. The author fills in historical details of wartime activity to ground the reader in time and place. The letters captured the life and times in 1917-19 France in graphic detail and left me with a greater awareness of what life was like for a young man going off to war. It made me appreciate the value of letter writing in preserving history. A compelling and educational read. ( )
